World Alzheimer's Day

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, and this year the theme of, ‘Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s’ highlights the importance of support for people living with dementia, and their families, following a diagnosis.

The experienced team at Narangba Aged Care provides a successful, diverse, and engaging program to support residents who live with all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s.

A dedicated memory support wing, Sideling, has a specific program for residents living with Alzheimer’s. Residents also have access to the most beautiful garden surrounds which provide a calming and relaxing environment for residents to enjoy at their leisure.

There is a range of activities to choose from, and one of the most popular things is cuddles with visiting puppies which brings lots of joy and smiles. A brain trainer game on the computer is always a favourite and gets residents thinking hard as they try and solve puzzles. These games are not only fun, but also support cognitive function and memory. Residents have the option to play many games through the brain trainer application including fishing, music trivia and general knowledge trivia. We have also recently introduced music therapy into our program which has been a highlight for residents as music has many therapeutic and calming effects.

While the priority at Narangba is to ensure residents enjoy a rich and fulfilling life, supporting families is also important. The team is in regular contact with family members encouraging feedback or suggestions. With 15 residents in Sideling, the wing has become a close-knit family where residents, their families, and the team support each other.

The dedicated team in the memory support wing is dedicated to providing the very best care to residents, with many saying they believe it is their calling. Their passion, patience, and willingness to continuously develop their skills and knowledge in all forms of dementia including Alzheimer’s ensures they can provide warm, loving care to residents.
