Meet our Physio Assistant, Sue

On this special occasion of Aged Care Employee Day, we celebrate Australia’s residential, home and community aged care workers. This year’s theme #ThanksForCaring recognises everyone involved in caring for older Australians. This year, we asked our wonderful Physio Assistant, Sue Pooley, to share her aged care journey and what working at Narangba Aged Care means to her.

What made you want to pursue a career in the aged care sector?

My mum and her mum worked in aged care. It was always a dream of mine to follow in their footsteps.

What do you like most about your role and working at the home?

I moved up from being a PCA to become a Physio Assistant. As much as I loved being a carer, becoming a Physio Assistant meant I was able to have more one on one time with residents through the whole home. Being able to assist with them in gaining strength through exercise and massage, all while having fun.

What is most challenging about working in aged care?

Not being able to help with strengthening for all residents can be hard. Losing residents that you work with each day is the most heart-breaking.

What is a special memory you have from working at the home?

Being one of the first workers to open Narangba after transferring from Seabrae Manor, I have many, many memories.

The one that sticks in my mind is the first day. Our lovely resident, Elsie, was also transferring from Seabrae Manor. We expected her around the 9.30 am time, so here we are preparing everything for her arrival, running around like crazy people. We were going to get her to cut a ribbon on entry, photographs etc, and she turns up at 7 am – 8 am! Wow didn’t that catch us off guard. In she walks proud as punch. All we could do is laugh.
